About R.A.L. Bobcat

About those tight spaces - Roy Lamont

Part of the Community

In 1989 I had been working at the local boat building shop for 4 years. I decided I wanted to venture out and start my own business and decided to purchase my first Bobcat Skid-Steer and Backhoe attachment. I played around in the back yard learning the operations and manoeuvres of the equipment.

Living in Duncan my whole life it didn’t take long before I was doing residential and commercial jobs around the Cowichan Valley. As time passed, I traded my Backhoe attachment for a Bobcat Excavator and business grew from there. I believe in maintaining good running equipment, which means less downtime, and offers more reliability. I believe quality work comes with experience.

There is value in being a part of a growing community and knowing that RAL Bobcat Service has been a strong connection in serving the South Vancouver Island. It’s nice to hear people say they have seen your trucks or machines working or recognize the R.A.L. logo. I married my wife Heather in 1994, and we have raised our family in the valley. It has always been a beautiful friendly place to call home.

Working in Tight Spaces

Tight confined spaces are no problem for us, with 30 years of experience we know how to handle even the smallest of areas. Occasionally we encounter jobs that are too narrow for our standard equipment, but that is where the small track dumper comes in. We have the ability to navigate through the narrow margins, such as between a house and fence post, and it is powerful enough to get the job done.

Our 5-ton roll-off truck is well suited for small load delivery and manoeuvring through tight and confined spaces. We have successfully fit our truck/roll-off bins through the narrowest of margins, with sometimes only one inch of space left on either side.

BC Hydro

I have been subcontracting with BC Hydro for over 25 years, operating machines in Hydro Substations around Vancouver Island. Often these jobs are in very confined spaces where expertise is key to the successful completion.

There is only half an inch clearance on either side sometimes, depending on the job. A lot of the time it is very tight. That’s what I do: get into the tight spots. There are many variables with electrical components that sometimes can be challenging, and for me, safety and knowing what’s around you at all times is #1 in substations.

Precision Matters

I have a keen eye, if something is not straight or level, if it’s even 1/8th inch out, instead of crooked, I can tell that it’s not level. For the tight spaces that kind of awareness really help.

Because that half an inch is really half an inch, you can’t be off with that in tight areas. If you are trenching for electrical lines or laying drainage pipes getting the precise depth/grade and level is very important. It is essential to do the job right the first time. In doing this we are creating repeat customers and customer referrals.
